New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi, the chief accused in the multi-crore Commonwealth Games scandal, took a U turn from his earlier claims of dementia and said that there was a problem in his heart and not in his mind after a check-up at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday.
“Jo koi problem hai vo heart ka hi hai, my mind is ok, logo ne uthaya hua hai. I remember everything. Whatever problem is there, it’s in my heart. I am fine,” Kalmadi told reporters after he underwent a series of diagnostic tests to ascertain his claims of ill health.
Kalmadi was taken to AIIMS after his reports of the July 19 tests could not confirm him suffering from dementia. The AIIMS check-up today was confirmed by a Delhi court and reports added that it was because of Kalmadi’s behest to meet his relatives first that delayed the new tests from being conducted earlier.
He had said that he was suffering from dementia - seen as a legal ploy to delay the sentencing of the 66-year old politician in the CWG scam. The MRI that was conducted on him on 19 July at LNJP Hospital shows, in medical jargon, `diffused cerebral atrophy with old ischemic changes in brain parenchyma with calcified granuloma in caudothalamic groove on left side (of his brain)`.This condition, according to neurologists, can be induced by diabetes.
Kalmadi was checked by a three doctor panel at AIIMS and the senior neurologist has advised the politician to undergo more tests. A report has been sent to Tihar Jail authorities.
