QBR to arrive in Guwahati on July 20

Queen`s Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to arrive here on July 20 from Sikkim where it will be received by the Assam government and state Olympic Association officials.

Guwahati: Queen`s Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to arrive here on July 20 from
Sikkim where it will be received by the Assam government and state Olympic Association officials. Assam Olympic Association General Secretary and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain today told reporters here that he will receive the baton at the Nehru Stadium from where it will proceed to the state secretariat at Dispur. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be present at the secretariat to receive the Baton from where it will start its final leg of the journey to the town. The relay will culminate at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra where Sports Minister Bharat Narah will receive it along with other state government officials. Several prominent sports personalities of the state like 92-year-old former tennis player Pulin Das, Arjuna awardees Bhogeswar Barua and Monalisa Barua Mehta, footballers Toshen Bora, Gilbertson Sangma and Jewel Bey will participate in the 10-km relay of the baton. The Baton will travel from here to Meghalaya`s capital Shillong the next day. The QBR, which was launched by Queen Elizabeth II in London last October in presence of Indian President Pratibha Patil, is scheduled to reach its final destination Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on October 3 when the Games would be opened.
