New Delhi: A special court granted the CBI an eight day remand of ex- CWG OC chief Suresh Kalmadi who was found guilty by the sleuths after a third round of questioning by the investigative agencies.
Behind the bars for misdoings in the Commonwealth Games, Kalmadi was produced in a special CBI court here Friday. To add insult to injury, a man tried to hit him with a slipper inside the court premises.
As per the sequence of events, Kalmadi was brought to the Patiala House court by the CBI. While he was walking towards the court room, surrounded by a group of policemen, a man later identified as Kapil Thakur, lunged at him with his slipper but was prevented from hitting Kalmadi by alert cops.
Kalmadi did not lose his smile through the incident.Thakur, wearing a T-shirt, was whisked away to the Tilak Marg police station. Police officers said they were questioning him. "He is unemployed and belongs to Madhya Pradesh," the official told reporters.
According to media reports, the man was also carrying an affidavit in which he had demanded strict action against Kalmadi. Some papers also procured from him hinted at his urge to punish the politician.
66-year-old Kalmadi was yesterday arrested by CBI on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption in connection with awarding some Games contracts and the ruling Congress wasted no time in suspending the Lok Sabha MP from Pune.
The agency also arrested two other OC officials Surjeet Lal, Deputy Director General (Procurement) and A S V Prasad, Joint Director General (Sports) in the same case.The CBI registered a case under section 120B (conspiracy) read with Section 420 (cheating) IPC and other relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act in the case.
