Bengal claimed ten gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals with a major share coming in badminton to finish with 32 gold, 27 silver and 26 bronze medals and pip Bangladesh in the championship that concluded here yesterday. The visitors had a share of 28 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals with the last day yielding only two gold, three silver and five bronze medals. It was a clean sweep in badminton for West Bengal shuttlers with Subhankar Dey beating Arup Baidya 21-17, 22-20 to clinch the men`s singles title while Barnali Raha outplayed Amrita Mukherjee 21-12, 21-13 to bag the women`s title. Amrita and Barnali then made it two with victories in doubles. The West Bengal women`s football team came up with a splendid display to win the third encounter 3-0 and clinch gold. Aduri Khatun capped a fine hattrick scoring in the 40th, 60th and 87th minutes. The hosts beat Bangladesh in all the three matches to win the gold in kho-kho event while Bengal, which had won twice earlier in basketball, took the gold after the third game was abandoned owing to rain. In kabaddi, the two teams had won once and the third and crucial game was abandoned owing to rain. Both teams were declared joint winners. PTI
