World champion Alessandro Ballan of Italy did not start 17th stage of the Tour of Spain.

Madrid: World champion Alessandro Ballan of Italy did not start 17th stage of the Tour of Spain.
The Lampre rider made a planned abandon of the race in order to train back home in Italy for next week`s world championships.Fellow Italian Damiano Cunego, who took silver in last year`s world championships, also failed to start stage 17, a flat 193.6 kilometre run from Ciudad Real to Puertollano.
Ballan will defend his road world title on Sept. 27 in Mendrisio, Switzerland.The Tour of Spain finishes on Sunday.
