Assembly elections 2017: I bow to people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their trust in BJP, says PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh indicated a strong support for politics of good governance and development.

He also said, "I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP. I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned in furthering the development journey of these states and serve the people tirelessly."

BJP chief Amit Shah too said that the party's victory in the Gujarat and Himachal Assembly polls was the win of PMa Modi's development agenda against the politics of casteism and appeasement.

In a series of tweets, Shah attributed the party's victory in Gujarat to PM Modi's popularity and the public welfare works carried by the Centre and the state government.

He greeted people and party workers in both states and thanked them for reposing their faith in the BJP. The BJP chief also congratulated and complimented the party's state leaders in both states for the victory.

The BJP on Monday recorded sixth straight victory in Gujarat and evicted the Congress in Himachal.

The elections for the 182-seat Gujarat Assembly were held on December 9 and 14, after an acrimonious campaign, which was dominated by a face-off between PM Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

During the campaign in Gujarat, PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah had trained guns on the Congress on issues like Ram Temple, alleged Pakistani interference in the Gujarat polls and (suspended Congress leader) Mani Shankar Aiyar's remarks.

On the other hand, Rahul had persistently attacked PM Modi and the BJP for "not talking about the future of Gujarat" and skipping key issues being faced by the people of the state.

In the 2012 elections in Gujarat, the BJP had won 115 seats while the Congress emerged victorious in 61 seats.

The BJP has won every election since 1995 in the home state of PM Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. However, it was out of power for a couple of years due to party infighting and rebellion by Shankersinh Vaghela.

The saffron party came back to power in 1998, and has ruled uninterrupted since then. 

In Himachal, corruption was the main focus of the BJP campaign with the party training its guns at Singh, while the Congress hit out at the BJP over the issue of GST and demonetisation.

Himachal has a tradition of change in government after every election. The BJP ousted the Congress in 1990 and the Congress avenged defeat in 1993. The BJP formed the government with the help of Himachal Vikas Congress in 1998 and the Congress was back in power in 2003. The BJP made a comeback in 2007.
