Another entertaining day of The Ashes came to an end. It's certainly a topsy-turvy day. But man of day was Moeen Ali, without a doubt. He showed his all-round skills to bail England out at crucial junctures. Another highlighter of the day was the fluent knock by the ageing Aussie opener, Chris Rogers, who missed his ton by mere five runs. Wicket of Voges in the end might give the home side an edge in the morning session tomorrow. At the close of 2nd day's play visitors were on 264 for five, 166 runs adrift. Shane Watson was not out on 29 and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon was unbeaten on six.

Over 63 | Score 247/4 (Voges 26*, Watson 24*)

Shane Watson and Adam Voges faced too many difficulties in the middle, in the last five overs. Voges has been there for quite some time now but he has struggled to play fluently, especially against the speedsters. Watson hasn't missed any opportunity to collect a boundary off a loose ball, but he too has been shaky. Ali and Ben Stokes have bowled the last couple of overs for the hosts.

21:39 PM

Over 55 | Score 212/4 (Voges 14*, Watson 5*)

Moeen Ali is turning out to be the start of the day. The offie picked up his 2nd wicket as he got the better of Michael Clarke. After proving his mettle with the bat the all-rounder is giving a tough time to the Aussies with the ball as well. Ali is testing the patience of batsmen. Shane Watson has come to join Voges in the middle. Australia are now losing their grip a bit. The visitors need a big partnership here. They are still trailing by 217 runs and have 6 wickets remaining.

BIG BIG Wicket. Roges Out! The opener missed his ton by mere five runs. Change of angle and a bit of extra bounce did the trick for Mark Wood. Mind it! It's his maiden Ashes Test wicket. With the fall of Rogers wicket, Adam Voges has walked into the middle to acompany skipper Clarke. A wicket or two here will push the visitors on the backfoot. Cook has juggled his bowlers well thus far.

Tea Break

This session of play certainly belonged to England as they picked up two big wickets in the form of -- Warner and Smith. Last wicket of Smith was a super soft dismissal. He literally threw away his wicket to offie Ali. But the saving grace at the moment for the visitors is no other than Chris Rogers who has reached to 74. Skipper Michael Clarke is playing along side the opener.

SPD Smith c Cook b Ali 33 (56b)

19:50 PM

Over 32 | Score 127/1 (Rogers 69*, Warner 31)

Steven Smith has picked up Moeen Ali as his bunny. The number one ranked right-hander has collected most of his boundaries in the offie`s over. His footwork has been  exceptional against the spinner. However, he is not looking that comfortable against the speedsters. In the meanwhile, visitors have crossed the 100-run mark at a cost of one wicket.

19:17 PM

Over 25 | Score 95/1 (Rogers 55*, Warner 14*)

Aging Aussie opener, Chris Rogers, is still going strong as he slammed yet another fifty. In the 23rd over, bowled by offie Ali, he placed the ball towards third man to reach the mark. The southpaw has been playing sensible cricket. For the records it's his seventh successive Test half-centuries. What a form he has been in. On the other end, Smith is looking quite comfortable in the middle.

18:35 PM

Over 15 | Score 52/1 (Rogers 28*, Warner 0*)

James Anderson provided the home side their first breakthrough. Superb catch at first slip by Cook as Warner tried to drive the ball and manage just a thick outside edge. Key batsman in Australian line up Steven Smith came to the crease.

DA Warner c Cook b Anderson 17 (42b)

17:44 PM

Over 9 | Score 26/0 (Rogers 15*, Warner 5*)

Australian openers made sure that they go for lunch without losing any wicket. However, English skipper Cook tried his best by using his four bowlers -- Anderson, Broad, Ali and Wood -- in mere nine overs to get a breakthrough before going for the break. English batsmen have done their job, now it's time for the bowlers to trouble the Aussies.

17:18 PM

Over 5 | Score 18/0 (Rogers 7*, Warner 5*)

There was an lbw appeal made against Rogers off the last ball of Stuart Broad's first over. It pitched on line and hit the left-hander on the pads, the umpire's decision was not-out and it stayed the same as the hot-spot showed there was a big inside edge as well. As per his own standards, it has been quite a slow start from David Warner so far. He is yet to find a boundary while Rogers has one to his name.

16:46 PM

Over 102.1 | Score 430/10 (Wood 3*)

England are all out for 430! Starc dismissed Ali in the 101st over where he flashed hard at a ball with width on offer and was caught in the slip cordon by Watson. In his next over, Anderson charged down the track and missed a ball which was full and crashed into the stumps. Starc has a five-fer and he has bowled well today! English batsmen have done their work and it's time for the bowlers to weave their magic.

JM Anderson b Starc 1 (6b)

MM Ali c Watson b Starc 77 (88b)

16:34 PM

Over 100 | Score 419/8 (Ali 77*, Wood 3*)

Moeen Ali reached his half-century as he got a bottom edge off Starc which rushed past fine leg for a boundary. Since the start of play today, he played some confident strokes, not letting the Australian bowlers dominate the proceedings. Meanwhile, Broad's innings ended when he bottom edged a delivery from Lyon straight into Haddin's gloves. Ali and Broad added a 52-run stand for the eighth wicket.

SCJ Broad c Haddin b Lyon 18 (26b)

15:56 PM

Over 93 | Score 362/7 (Ali 34*, Broad 11*)

England survived a scare when Stuart Broad, tried to fend off a bouncer from Mitchell Johnson and mistimed it to Voges at short leg. Earlier it looked like the catch was taken cleanly, however the replays suggested that when Voges grabbed the ball, it was touching the ground. Meanwhile, Ali has looked convincing so far. The Australians, are bowling a barrage of bouncers at Broad, who is looking vulnerable against all of them.

14:31 PM

Once he was set, he played some superb strokes and made Australia's world class bowling attack look mediocre. Root was batting as if he was playing limited-overs cricket and he was happy with his effort on the opening day.

14:29 PM

It was a forgettable first day for the Australian pacers, where after taking three wickets for 43 runs, they had to wait for long for the fourth breakthrough as Joe Root and Gary Ballance stitched a magnificent 153-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Root, who was dropped on 0 by Brad Haddin off Mitchell Starc, made the best of the dropped opportunity and slammed his second Ashes ton.
