Passenger train derails in Assam, 4 injured

Five coaches and the engine of a passenger train derailed in Kokrajhar district of Assam in the early hours Saturday, seriously injuring its engine driver and causing minor injuries to some passengers.

Guwahati: Four persons were injured when five coaches and the engine of the Alipurduar-Guwahati Sifung passenger train jumped the track in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Saturday.

The derailment occurred on a bridge between Salakati and Basugaon stations at about 5.15 A.M., spokesman for the North Eastern Frontier Railway, Pranav Jyoti Sharma, said here.

The motorman and the assistant driver of the train are among the four persons who picked up minor injuries in the mishap and have been admitted to hospital.

A relief train was immediately rushed to the site bearing the necessary help, including medical aid.

Senior railway officials from the railway headquarters, Alipurduar Division and New Bongaigaon have reached the site to lead the restoration work.

The derailment affected running of trains on the up line and some passenger trains were cancelled, the spokesman said. 

The cancelled passenger trains are New Jalpaiguri- Dekargaon passenger, Fakiragram-Kamakhya passenger, New Jalpaiguri-New Coochbehar Special, Dhubri-Fakiragram passenger, Guwahati-Alipurduar junction Passenger, Kamakhya- Fakiragram passenger, Silghat-Dhubri Rajyarani Express, New Coochbehar-New Jalpaiguri special and Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express.

Tomorrow's Fakiragram-Dhubri passenger, too, has been cancelled, added the North Eastern Frontier Railway spokesman.
