New Delhi: Delhi's population soared to
to 1.67 crore over the last 10 years which is an increase of
29 lakh while the sex ratio has gone up to 866 per 1,000 males
from 821 in the year 2001.
According to the new census released on Tuesday, the total
population of the city, which accounts for 1.38 per cent of
India's total population, comprises 89.89.76 lakh males and
77.76 lakh females.
The sex ratio of 866 in the national capital is fourth
lowest among all the states and Union territories. Daman and
Diu has the lowest sex ratio of 618 female per one thousand
males followed by 775 in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 818 in
Chandigarh.
The per square kilo metre density, according to the
census, is 11,297 persons which is highest in the entire
country.
The highest population density is in Delhi's
north-east district (37,346 per sq km) while the lowest is in
Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh (just one per sq km).
The literacy rate in the city is 86.34 per cent
against 81.67 per cent in 2001. According to the census
figure, the national literacy rate has been estimated at 74.04
per cent in 2011.
The literacy rate of males is 91.03 per cent while for
female literacy rate was estimated at 80.93 per cent.
The population up to six years of age is counted at
19.70 lakh while population of seven years old and above has
been found at 1.47 crore.
The percentage decadal growth of population during
2001-2011 has been counted at 20.96 against national average
of 17.64 per cent.
