Dikshit`s direction for accommodation to pavement dwellers
Amid concerns being raised over the safety of the homeless this winter, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday directed agencies concerned to provide accommodation to pavement dwellers in the city.

New Delhi: Amid concerns being raised over the safety of the homeless this winter, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday directed agencies concerned to provide accommodation to pavement dwellers in the city.
Dikshit said 150 night shelters have been made functional to provide shelter to the homeless during the winter season.
As per estimates, the city has around 60,000 homeless people.
For the past three years, the Supreme Court has been passing periodical directives to the authorities across the country including Delhi to provide night shelter facilities to the homeless during winter.
Dikshit directed Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to improve facilities at the night shelters to ensure a comfortable of the homeless people.
She also instructed the agency to publicise the facilities available in the night shelters with the help of NGOs working in the area so that homeless people come and stay there.
The government had set aside Rs 6 crore for providing various facilities to the homeless at the night shelters in the 2012-2013. Officials said 84 temporary and 66 permanent shelters have been made available for the homeless.
They said capacity of temporary night shelters is 4,600 and at present around 2500 homeless people are staying in them.
