New Delhi: Delhi Government on Friday announced a slew of measures aimed at strengthening the policing system to prevent recurrences of shameful incidents like the brutal rape of a 23-year-old student recently.
Addressing the media in the national capital, Home Secretary RK Singh insisted that licence IDs would be made compulsory to be displayed in all buses, autos and taxis plying on the roads here.
“Private buses are not allowed to pick passengers but around 1600 private buses have been identified which are on contract basis, but are still picking passengers — they have been impounded and will remain impounded” Singh said.
The Home Secretary further added, “Five accused have been nabbed till now and one is still absconding. As we have indicated, we will file the chargesheet in this case quickly, force for a fast track trial in this case and also will put forward request for a day-to-day trial.”
Further emphasizing on the gravity of the issue Singh said, “As this is a very critical case so we will ask for stringent punishment for the accused which will also include application of section (307)—that is, attempt to murder. Life term is the maximum punishment in such type of cases, so we will try to get the maximum punishment for the accused.”
While talking about measures to ensure that the people of Delhi feel safe in the city, Singh assured, “Whether it is a man or a woman everyone should feel safe to move around round the clock. This (Delhi) is going to be a place where any ‘goondagardi’ or ‘dadagiri’ will be swiftly punished.”
Adding on to the safety measures for woman, Singh said, “Licence ID would be made compulsory to be displayed in buses, autos and taxis. The route where females travel we will keep special track. We will have plainclothes people on the streets, also on buses, and we hope to catch some people soon.”
RK Singh also praised Delhi Police for promptly acting on this case as he said, “Within 5-minutes two PCR vans reached the site and have also arrested the accused within two days, which is a remarkable move.”
Further insisting that no innocent should be punished Sing said, “Delhi gang-rape has shaken all of us so the case must be investigated thoroughly and the guilty must be brought under the claws of the law. But at the same time no innocent should be harassed. It’s the easiest job for police to arrest anyone but our motive is to punish the guilty.”
