Trial in Delhi gang-rape to begin from Jan 3: Reports

The trial in the Delhi gang-rape case is expected to begin from January 3, reports said on Monday.

New Delhi: In view of increasing public pressure on the government to provide speedy justice to a 23-year-old medical student, who was brutally gang-raped by a group of six men in a moving bus, the trial in the case is expected to begin from January 3. As per reports, the government has decided to conduct a day-to-day trial in the case from January 3. Besides, the Delhi High Court has also reportedly issued a directive to the state government to conduct trial in all rape cases on a day-to-day basis in the fast-track courts. A leading TV news channel CNN-IBN reported that the cases related to crime against women will now be tried on a daily basis in Delhi. It also claimed that the Ministry of Home Affairs will initiate process of setting up more fast-track courts for speedier disposal of cases in the national capital and later across the country. The new measures to curb rising crime against women came a week after public protests against the brutal gang-rape of the 23-year-old medical student in a moving bus in Delhi turned violent and demands for justice grew louder. Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said that the government is not opposed to people holding peaceful protests but their march to the presidential house is not right. Shinde said he has been meeting student representatives from the day protests started in the capital against the gang-rape of a young woman Dec 16. "I accept that calm and quiet protesters can demonstrate, and there is no problem (with that) as it is the right of the public," he said. "But gathering at Vijay Chowk, trying to breach barricades and marching to Rashtrapati Bhavan is not right. Rashtrapati Bhavan is prestigious for the country." He said the government had announced several measures to ensure the safety of women in the capital. "The government is very serious on these issues. Accused were immediately arrested and we have told that case would be taken on a fast track basis. We are following proceedings in court on a day-to-day basis," he said.
