Tulsi calls Tomar's arrest by Delhi Police 'high-handed'

Senior Supreme Court advocate KTS Tulsi on Tuesday said Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar's arrest by the Delhi Police on Tuesday was 'high-handed'.

New Delhi: Senior Supreme Court advocate KTS Tulsi on Tuesday said Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar's arrest by the Delhi Police on Tuesday was 'high-handed'.

He said that the arrest is an outcome of `political vendetta, a way of rubbing the nose of the state government on the ground', in the ongoing conflict between the Central Government and the Government of National Capital Territory .

Tulsi said :"Case was pending before the high court and two cases are going on. Parties have placed the material, they have issued the notice. Tomar's counsel had placed the communication from the university that he was a bonafide student. When the matter is pending before the court, I don't understand what is the provocation of the Delhi Police to register an FIR and then to arrest."

"I don't know whether they consulted the Speaker and took his permission, because they will have to place the entire matter before the Speaker. So, when all these proceedings are going on, to arrest is high-handedness, this is only to harass and humiliate a minster and the government. This is a very sad state of affairs and I wish that such unjustified actions are not resorted to," Tulsi told a news agency here.

He said: "There is a conflict going on between the Central Govt and the Government of NCT. It is political vendetta. It is quite clear on the face of it. It is been done only to rub the nose of the Government of NCT on the ground and humiliate them, defame them."

Tulsi added: "It is one thing to have the power to arrest, but the other is when to use it, to have the justification for the arrest. I don't think there is any justification for this arrest. He is a serving minister, and is not running away anywhere. The matter is pending before the high court, before the Bar Council. They could have very well waited for a while."

Tomar was arrested by the Delhi Police this morning and taken to the Hauz Khas police station in connection with the fake certificate row.

Tomar has been facing charges that the education certificates submitted by him while filing nomination for Delhi Assembly polls earlier this year were fake.

Bihar's Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, from where Tomar claimed to have obtained his law degree, had earlier stated that the record of his provisional certificate did not exist in the university's record.

The BJP and Congress have been demanding Tomar's resignation since April when allegations were first made that he had faked his Bihar law degree.
