Swimming star and actress Esther Williams dies at 91

London: US swimming champion-turned-movie star Esther Williams has passed away in Los Angeles. She was 91.

Williams` spokesman has announced that the actress had been in declining health due to old age. The national swimming champion was known for the MGM "aqua musicals" of the 1940s and `50s that turned her into a major Hollywood star. She became known as Hollywood`s Mermaid after featuring in movies like `Dangerous When Wet` and `Easy to Wed.` Williams retired from the movies in 1962, following her marriage to her third husband- Hollywood playboy Fernando Lamas.
