A large number of Engineering students opt for management course after completing their degree.

With an intention to secure better job options and good pay packages, students prefer an MBA after BE or B Tech rather than continuing with their own stream.
Fewer Engineers at IIM-Ahmedabad

However, with a significant change in the admissions policy, the premier management institute IIM Ahmedabad, has decided that they will take fewer engineers among new students given admission and increase the number of students from non-engineering streams from 4% to 18%.

Engineering students therefore need to think about options other than MBA after completing their engineering degree.

Let us have a look at some such options:

After completing BE or B Tech degree, the basic choice has to be between two options: whether you want to work or you want to study further.

If there are no financial obligations and you can afford to study further, there are several courses that you can take up, other than a MBA.
Further studies in Engineering

A post graduate specialization in your own area of study will help you earn more salary and also place you in priority during interviews.

Like an ME or M Tech also helps you gain in depth knowledge in your area of specialization as it involves detailed extensive study. If you are very keen you can also go on to obtain a PhD and get into research.

Computer Applications

If you wish to switch streams, you can consider various options like Masters in Computer Applications (MCA), MSc in Information Technology.

Law and offbeat options

You could also opt for LLB, Masters in Tourism Administration, Masters in Hospitality Studies, Event Management and Public Relations, Designing, Masters in Social Work.

Civil Service

If you wish to get into government services, you can consider appearing for the Civil Services Exam or Indian Engineering Services Exam and go for IAS, IPS or IES. You can also consider the defense services option.

If you wish to get into teaching, you can complete your post graduation, that is ME and M Tech and then go for NET or SET.

Go abroad

If you want to explore options abroad, you can also consider doing an MS. Just ensure that you are mentally prepared to go outside India and financially you can manage the course and the stay abroad.

You need to appear for GRE/TOEFL for doing MS in foreign countries.
