ACC contemplates separating track and road races

The future edition of the Asian Cycling Championships could witness separate track and road events - similar on the lines of World Championships.

New Delhi: The future edition of the Asian Cycling Championships could witness separate track and road events - similar on the lines of World Championships.
In a proposal put forward during the ACC congress, the members want bifurcation of the annual affair as they want points earned by the cyclist in the track competition help them in securing a place in the world championships.
"The Asian cycling championships are being held just after the World track cycling championships (in Minsk) last month. The points earned by the cyclists here do not help them take points for World championships," CFI general secretary Onkar Singh said. "So, two-three countries came up with the idea to plan track races of Asian cycling ahead of the World championships which would help cyclists from the continent. The ACC has decided to form a committee to deliberate on the issue and by the next congress, we can expect a decision on it," he said. The road World championships, however, is held after the Asian championships. Last year, the global event was held at Limburg, The Netherlands in September. "The development would mean that different countries would get the hosting rights for the two events," he said. Kazakhstan has already bagged the hosting rights for both track and cycling championships that will take place in Astana in 2014. PTI
