After five successful years in Bollywood, Britain-born actress Katrina Kaif is proud that she could prove all those wrong who wrote her off during her initial days in the industry. She is one of the few actresses who can boast of giving back to back hits at the Box Office, but there is a gentle, head strong, sensitive and practical lass behind that glamorous exterior. In an exclusive interview with Swati Chaturvedi of Spicezee.com, Katrina talks about her closely guarded personal life on ‘Kahiye Janaab’.Excerpts:
Swati: Do you think that actresses can ever be friends with each other in the industry?
Katrina: Well, I think I can only speak for myself, and being a Cancerian, I’m very sensitive. But in my opinion, I don’t see such friendships working here, because of the simple reason that one is honestly too busy with the work, and the little time they get, they obviously want to spend it with the family. Also because it’s very competitive out there, it becomes really bad, and the friendship lasts between nothing more than three to six months.
I would like to say that Preity is one actress who’s fun to work with. She has this exceptional quality in her that allows you to really trust her.
Swati: Now, I know you have been asked this question a lot of times, but you’ve always been hesitant while talking about your relationship with Salman Khan. Are you Salman’s girl?
Katrina: Well, I would say that there are so many ways to describe a relationship. And I’ve never wanted to answer questions on my personal life because I’m not comfortable and this is my nature. Also because there have already been a lot of things being talked about our relationship. But everyone knows that we are friends. Salman is a very special person with a great heart.
Swati: When did you first meet Salman?
Katrina: (Laughs) Well, I think I can answer this one, it’s not that personal. Hmm…The first time I met Salman was at an all-girls party, there were only girls out there. And all of them are married now, and have kids. That’s all I can tell you.
Swati: There are a lot of things that have been said about Salman. People have gone to the extent of saying that he doesn’t know acting. What do you have to say about that? What do you think is Salman’s most special quality?
Katrina: Have people really been saying that Salman doesn’t know acting? That’s shocking, it’s news for me, I never knew this.
There’s no doubt about the fact that sometimes an actor loses interest in a particular movie, if a film takes too long to complete, or may be because of other reasons, but that’s common. But Salman, according to me, is very talented. My personal favourite of him is ‘Tere Naam’. I think he did a great job in the film.
Swati: Who was your favourite Bollywood actor before you became an actress?
Katrina: Honestly, Amitabh Bachchan was the only actor I knew before I joined Bollywood, and that was majorly because of his presence at Madamme Tussauds. I had heard a little about Shah Rukh Khan and others, but it took me a while to figure out who’s who in the industry.
Swati: Your latest release was a romantic one with Salman. But for most of your previous hits, which have been with Akshay Kumar, you have been liked a lot as a couple. You and Akshay are being tagged as the new Shah Rukh-Kajol. What do you have to say about that?
Katrina: I don’t mind the Shah Rukh-Kajol tag. I think they share awesome chemistry on screen and I’m happy that we are being seen like that. But I have done films with Abhishek, Bobby, Sunny, Akshay, Saif, Salman and Akshaye Khanna, but people always pick Akshay out of the lot. ‘Race’ was a superhit, but you would never hear or read me with Saif.
Swati: Why do you think it is like that? Why do you think people always choose to link you with Akshay and no one else?
Katrina: You know whenever I see Akshay paired with some other actress in a movie, I tell him that ‘you look better with me’. But I don’t know, since ‘Humko Deewana…’, which did not do too well at the Box Office, people have been talking about our chemistry. I would want to hear people say the same for me and Salman, and for any other actor. After all, who wants to hear comments like ‘you look awful together’!
Swati: I’m sure all the eligible bachelors who are watching the show right now would want to know your answer to this last question. Are you going to make Salman the happiest man in the world?
Katrina: Now, I’m not very uncomfortable with that question. (Laughs) I think I’m very young right now, I’m just 24 and very happy with the way things are going. I have been very lucky to have achieved this much. And I feel that even Salman is happy. But as I can only speak for myself, I would say that presently I don’t want things to change for me. I want to stay like this for some more time.
