President Pranab Mukherjee's wife, Suvra Mukherjee, was on Wednesday cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi.

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee's wife, Suvra Mukherjee, was on Wednesday cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium here.

The ashes were taken by the family to Haridwar this afternoon. The President, however, was back to work in Rashtrapati Bhavan within hours after his wife was cremated. In no time after the final rites, Mukherjee -- known to be a strict disciplinarian -- was attending to his official duties.

The funeral ceremony was attended by Pranab Mukherjee, their children Sharmistha, Abhijit and Indrajit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee, BJP leader LK Advani, among others were also present.

India's First Lady passed away at 10:51 am on Tuesday after a cardiac arrest at the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi.

The body of Suvra Mukherjee was kept at the Rashtrapati Bhavan from 3 pm to 5 pm yesterday for the family and friends to pay their last respects.

Thereafter, the body was shifted to her son's residence on Talkatora Road in Delhi.

"Suvra Mukherjee was suffering from a respiratory ailment and died after a cardiac arrest this morning. She was on ventilator till the time of her death," hospital public relations officer Sanjay Kumar told IANS yesterday.

The Delhi Police had taken over the Lodhi Road crematorium in preparation for this morning's last rites of Suvra Mukherjee, that saw a host of VVIPs attending.
