Nationwide terror alert: Gujrat was the target, not Gujarat?

New Delhi: Indian security agencies had sounded a nationwide alert last Friday after intelligence agencies said that 10 terrorists had entered Gujarat. However, if a report is to be believed then it could have been a case of confusion between the western state of Gujarat and Gujrat, a tiny village near Pathankot in Punjab.

As per a report in The Economic Times, the 'chatter' picked up by intelligence agencies may have been about Gujrat. The newspaper quotes sources in the government as saying that that it was possible that the plan was to attack a famous Shiva temple in Gujrat – a large number of people visit the temple on Shivratri.

The temple is very close to Dina Nagar – the militants who carried our Gurdaspur attacks last year had used the same route.

The ET report adds that the possibility of terrorists entering India via the Sir Creek route is remote - given the challenging terrain, it is near impossible that armed men can sneak in without attracting attention.
