Mumbai: A Mumbai-based diamond export company has been accused of religious discrimination after it denied employment opportunity to a young man because he follows Islam, a leading newspaper reported on Thursday.
MBA graduate Zeshan Ali Khan was looking for a job in a leading export house and sent his resume to Hare Krishna Exports Pvt Ltd.
The reply he got from the company that has a global presence shocked him.
It reportedly read: “Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Muslim candidates.”
Khan told the daily that most of his friends who too had applied at the same company were immediately given jobs. He, however, got a reply which he had never expected.
Khan later narrated his experience on Facebook and consequently received a 'regret' mail from the company after his social media post generated sharp reactions.
Mahendra S Deshmukh, Associate VP & Head-HR, wrote to Khan: “We would like to clarify that the company does not discriminate against candidates based on gender, caste, religion, etc. Any hurt caused in the matter is deeply regretted.”
“This erroneous email was sent by my colleague Mrs Dipika Tike who has joined recently and is still on training,” Deshmukh added in his mail.
Meanwhile, an FIR has also been registered in the case by the Mumbai Police.
"FIR has not been registered against any individual but against the company," Zeshan was quoted as saying by ANI.
