3288 persons killed in 18786 road accidents in J&K

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government today said as many as 3,288 persons were killed and 27,165 injured in 18,786 accidents in the state during last three years.

"During the years 2009, 2010 and 2011, 18,786 accidents took place as a result of which 3,288 persons were killed and 27,165 received injuries," Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a written reply to a question by Naresh Gupta in the Legislative Council here today.

Of these, 1,126 persons were killed and 8,348 injured in 6,006 accidents in 2009, 1,042 were killed, 8,709 were injured in 6,136 accidents in 2010 and 1,120 were killed, 10,108 injured in 6,644 accidents in 2011, he said.

Of these accidents, 14,861 accidental cases have been presented in court of law, he said adding seven accused persons were sentenced during the period.

Government has taken several measures to minimise the road accidents, he said adding Motor Vehicles Act have been amended in 2011 and Jammu and Kashmir Motor Vehicles rules 1991 were amended in February 2012 to make the penalty provision more stringent in order to deter the offenders.

A proposal to further amend Motor Vehicles Act in the backdrop of recommendation of the Sunder Committee is under consideration, he said.
