India vs England 2014: 1st Test, Day 2 - As it happened...

Zee Media Bureau/Suyash Srivastava Nottingham: The second day of this Test clearly belonged to India courtesy a record last-wicket partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami who put on 111-runs for the last wicket. England managed to get in the game in the post-lunch session as they dismissed Dhoni, Jadeja and Binny in quick time. But the dogged determination of India's tail completely changed the complexion of this Test. To make matters worse, England lost Alastair Cook as he was bowled round his legs in the fourth over by Shami. The pitch still looks good for batting but England need to forget that last session and start afresh tomorrow. There was a bit of drama on the last ball of the day as Sharma's delivery clipped Ballance's thigh pad and was caught by Dhoni down the leg. The Indian players appealed as they thought it nicked the left-hander's bat. But Kumar Dharmasena was unmoved and he signalled the end of day's play by taking the bails off. MS Dhoni had thrown the ball to Stuart Binny to bowl the penultimate over of the day. Binny just conceded one run in his first over in Test cricket. ============================================================== Over 15 || Score 39/1 Gary Ballance edge two Ishant Sharma deliveries off successive overs. Both times, the ball reached the slip fielder on the first bounce. The left-hander has looked comfortable for major part of the his innings. India made their second bowling change by bringing on Ravindra Jadeja into the attack. ============================================================== Over 10 || Score 18/1 Gary Ballance walked in to bat after Cook's dismissal. India made their first bowling change as they brought on Ishant Sharma into the attack. Both the batsmen did well after losing the early wicket. They have just looked to see the day through and not try anything out of the ordinary. Robson is on 16 and Ballance on 2. ============================================================== Over 5 || Score 13/1 Shami gave India the perfect start as he bowled Alastair Cook in the fourth over. Cook tried to push the straight delivery down the leg side and ended up completely missing the line of the ball. Cook lost his leg stump after the ball hit his pads on the way. Alastair Cook and Sam Robson opened the innings for England. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, fresh from his batting heroics, opened the bowling for India and was on the money from the very first bowl. Under pressure England captain got off the mark with a flick of his pads for single off the first bowl he faced. Unfortunately, he did not time it well enough and was holed out at mid-on by Joe Root. That wicket finally has put an end to England's misery. Both the tail-enders headed back to the dressing room as they were applauded by the dressing room led by Duncan Fletcher. Their shot selection remained impeccable as the post-tea session continued. Bhuvi drove Anderson through the covers for single to get to his fifty. Shami joined the party immediately off the next ball as he hit Anderson straight back over long on for a six to get to his fifty. That was a maiden Test fifty for India's number 10 and 11. ) ============================================================== India batting, 1st innings: After losing three quick wickets of after the post-lunch session, the Indian camp would be thrilled to get to 457. More importantly, they have managed to demoralize the England team with that 111-run last wicket partnership. The English have been in the field for almost two days now and they have to come out and play out the rest of the day without losing wickets. ============================================================== Over 161 || Score 457/10 Finally the last wicket record partnership came to an end as Bhuvi tried to hit Moeen Ali over his head. Unfortunately, he did not time it well enough and was holed out at mid-on to Joe Root. That wicket finally brought an end to England's misery. They leave the field with their heads held high. India have now reached a formidable total, courtesy these two who have added unbeaten 87 runs so far. While it would be great if these two can cross the 450-run mark, MS Dhoni won't mind if they can't after their marathon effort. ============================================================== Over 150 || Score 424/9 These two have surpassed the previous record for the highest tenth-wicket partnership between India vs England Test matches. Anil Kumble and S Sreesanth had stitched 73 runs for the last wicket at The Oval in 2007. Bhuvan and Shami have so far added 78 runs for the tenth-wicket partnership. More importantly, they have batted for more than 18 overs. ============================================================== Over 145 || Score 412/9 There would be enormous pressure on Alastair Cook now. He has been criticised for his defensive captaincy of late and in the last five overs, we saw the English bowlers bowling an outside the off-stump line to these two tail-enders. Over 140 || Score 397/9 This is proving to be a superb partnership for the Indian team. They have played the seamers with a solid defensive technique and haven't hesitated in charging down the wicket against spinners. They have so far added 51 runs for the last wicket now! ============================================================== Over 135 || Score 374/9 After doing all the hard work after lunch, the English bowlers are finding it extremely hard to breach through the defence of these two tail-enders. They have now added 28 runs for the last wicket. They have also batted for more than 12 overs now. ============================================================== Over 130 || Score 363/9 The last wicket is now frustrating the hosts. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar is playing with a good technique, Mohammed Shami too is complimenting him well without taking any risks. This partnership is now worth 17 runs. ============================================================== Over 125 || Score 348/9 Ishant Sharma was the next batsman to be dismissed as he shouldered arms to a straight delivery from Broad which came back to hit the stumps! As always, it has been a huge collapse by the Indian team. England are in command at the moment. I Sharma b Broad 1 (6b) ============================================================== Over 122 || Score 346/8 India lost two quick wickets as first Ravindra Jadeja was caught behind in the first over after lunch bowled by Ben Stokes. In the next over bowled by Stokes, Dhoni hit the ball straight towards mid-off and went for a suicidal single, Anderson produced a direct hit and it was a sad end of a brilliant innings. Stuart Binny too didn't last for long as after playing ten ball, he went for a cover drive off Stokes and hit it straight to Root at point. India will be extremely happy with the way they have batted so far and England will have to take some quick wickets in order to make a comeback in the match. ============================================================== Over 115 || Score 327/5 Vijay's innings finally came to an end when he was trapped in front of the wicket off an inswinger from Anderson. It seemed to be slightly higher, but the umpire was convinced that it would have hit the stumps. A memorable knock from Murali Vijay finally came to and end as he dragged himself out of the field. Ravindra Jadeja was the next man in and he made his intentions very clear by slamming two sixes off Moeen Ali's 12th over. He is currently batting on 16 off 9 balls while Dhoni is batting on 74. M Vijay lbw b Anderson 146 (361b) ============================================================== Over 110 || Score 300/4 There has been no respite for the English bowlers who are still searching for their first breakthrough of the day. Vijay is now batting on 146 and Dhoni is batting on 65. The partnership is now worth 167 runs. ============================================================== Over 105 || Score 290/4 Dhoni and Vijay continue to frustrate the hosts as England's search for the fifth wicket continues. This partnership is now worth 112 runs and these two are looking all set to take India to a huge first innings total. ============================================================== Over 100 || Score 277/4 That dropped chance could prove to be very costly for England as the partnership is now worth 99 runs. Dhoni is looking slightly vulnerable against the pacers as a result of which he is batting outside the crease, probably to negate the swing. Over 95 || Score 265/4 The first boundary of the day came from Murali Vijay's bat as he once again edged one towards the gully area for a boundary. The pitch witnessed low bounce in the first few overs and with every day, it is deteriorating. MS Dhoni was dropped by Matt Prior off Stuart Broad's bowling on 50! Prior, who took an excellent catch to dismiss Dhawan on Day 1, was probably too late to react when he got his hands to it but couldn't grab it. Good start by England so far. ============================================================== The players have come on the ground and it's a bright sunny day at Nottingham. Vijay was the most convincing Indian batsman as while the English bowlers continued to search for swing, he made sure to play from a straight bat even when reverse swing got into play. The job is half done by the Indian opener, as he, along with MS Dhoni, would now be expected to take the team to a formidable total in the first innings. On the other hand, there is a lot to ponder over for Alastair Cook, who looked short of ideas and options on the first day. While James Anderson and Stuart Broad – his two main weapons, failed to deliver the magic they did when India last toured England, he would have desperately missed a frontline spinner as Moeen Ali is by no standards a world class spinner. At stumps on day one, India were 259/4 with Vijay batting on 122 and skipper Dhoni batting on 54. Their partnership for the fifth wicket is now worth 81 runs and they can send England on the backfoot if they managed to play one entire session today.
