Srinagar: The minimum temperature rose slightly in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Thursday but at minus 2.3 degrees Celsius failed to provide relief from the extreme cold. Leh town was again the coldest in the state with the mercury dropping to minus 17 degrees.
"Due to cloudiness during the night there was some improvement in the minimum temperatures across the Kashmir Valley today while severe cold wave conditions continued in the Ladakh region without any respite," said Sonam Lotus, director of the local meteorological office here.
On Wednesday, the minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 3.4 degrees.
No rain or snowfall is expected in the valley in the next 48 hours.
"There's little chance of snowfall on the New Year's eve. We would have to welcome 2012 with the same weather conditions," he said.
In south Kashmir's Pahalgam hill station, the temperature touched a low of minus 6.3 degrees and minus 8.2 degrees in north Kashmir's Gulmarg ski resort.
Kargil town in Ladakh region witnessed a low of minus 14.8 degrees Celsius.
