Surya Namaskar row: Christians question ‘Sun God’ Zeenews Bureau

Bhopal: After a fatwa was issued against Madhya Pradesh government’s 'Surya Namaskar' push, Christian groups are also up in arms against the move.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government had planned to enter the Guinness Book of Records for the maximum number of people performing the ancient Yoga regimen together on the occasion of Swami Vivekanand's birthday on Thursday.

Muslim leaders had termed the move as un-Islamic and equated it with idol-worship, which is prohibited in Islam and issued a fatwa.

Now certain Christian groups have also come out in the open against ‘Surya Namaskar’. They argue that the exercise regimen is a religious activity as sun is being termed a God.

Even principals of some Christian run schools have opposed the move and said that, as per the Constitution, no one can be forced to perform a religious activity and termed the move as ‘saffronisation of schools’.

They accused the government of giving ‘oral directions’ to ensure that ‘Surya Namaskar’ is performed compulsorily in all schools.

It may be noted that the state government had asked the school education department to make arrangements to ensure maximum participation in the exercise.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clarified that the participation in the exercise is not compulsory. “It is not mandatory and there is nothing religious about it,” he said.

Chouhan added that it is just a form of exercise aimed at introducing children to the advantages of ‘Surya Namaskar’.

Several Yoga experts have expressed resentment over the politics being played over ‘Surya Namaskar’, which has been accepted the world over as a complete exercise.

Jf there is GOD in this unverse it is Surya Dev SUN . All these bunch of idiots do not know that the solar system is controlled by Sun Everthing as a matter of fact revolves around sun. how many of these fools will remain alive if there is no Sun for 15 Minutes. If it is a thanks giving prayer to almighty sun by way of surynamashkar which is in fact a pure yogic exercise nobody should take objection to it . be they are atheists or theists following any religion. surya does not belong to hindus they are on a very small portion of this easrth it belongs more to them who control and occupy major portions on this earth.

Christian schools dont have any right to say it `religious`. In all the missionalry schools, students are forced to read the excerpts from Bible. Isn`t it religious?...In India, the secularism is taken in a very wrong way. We are a country which got developed, which got enriched, which got different because of its culture. and Hinduism is nothing but our culture and lifestyle.

India [Hindustan] might have politically evolved as a Secular nation, but you cannot deny that India has a Hindu heritage. Any number of pointless Fatwas or cries of Unchristianity will NOT change that fact. Shame on the bunch of idiots who proclaim fallacies in the name of a beautiful religion that is Islam. Quite sure that whether He/She be a Hindu, Christian or Muslim, Surya Namaskara will help them all, irrespective of their God.

Nothing but ``Hindu Tushtikaran``(appeasement) for Vote Bank politics. In this - state 59.8% of children are underweight 23.4% of the population is undernourished and 9.4% of children who die under the age of 5 die from hunger. If CM is so honest he can do something for this rather to make world record.

In India anything and everything is deeply connected with spirituality. Whether it is food, clothing, art, culture, agriculture, language, and even an excercise. So it is easy for anybody to protest aganist anything of Indian origin laballing it as `saffronisation`. Those protesting aganist Indianess have specific agenda dictated by outsiders.

Why these people want to play with the sentiments of Hindus. Hindus have never questioned their sentiments.
