1,231 lives saved by Coast Guard between Aug 2012-July 2013

The rescue operations by Indian Coast Guard and other agencies saved 1,231 lives in the last one year period.

Mumbai: The rescue operations by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and other agencies saved 1,231 lives in the last one year period.
The statistic was put forth at the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Board meeting, chaired by Director General, ICG, here today. "Between August 2012 and July 2013, 542 people were rescued by Coast Guard independently, and remaining 689 were rescued in co-ordination with merchant mariners and other agencies," said an ICG official. The Board meets annually to discuss policy issues, to formulate guidelines, procedures, and to consider recommendations for updating of `National Search and Rescue Plan`. Director General Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal stressed in the meeting the need for strengthening the co-operation mechanism between various resources agencies for efficiently search and rescue operations, the official said.
