New Delhi: BJP on Thursday backed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's comments that Manmohan Singh should have voted in Assam polls and maintained that by not exercising his franchise, the Prime Minister had sent a wrong message to people, especially the youth.

"Modi has explained his position and taken a clear line that it is an important duty of every citizen to vote. The Prime Minister is a registered voter in Assam where his party is contesting to form a government. What message he has given to the youth (by not voting)," BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Modi had said at a public meeting held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar earlier today that he wondered why Singh and his wife had not exercised their franchise in the Assam Assembly elections.

Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, and his wife Gursharan Kaur are registered as voters in the state but did not cast their votes on April 11.

The Prime Minister left for China on April 12 for the BRICS summit.
