Ex-IAF chief Tipnis blames Nehru for defeat in 1962 China war

New Delhi: A former IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal (retd) A Y Tipnis has sought to blame former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for India's defeat in the 1962 war with China, amid a continuing debate on why air power was not used during the conflict.

Speaking at a seminar 'India and China: After five decades of 1962 war' here, Tipnis also alleged that Nehru had surrendered national security interests to realise his "ambition" to be a world leader.

"It was more or less universally accepted perhaps grudgingly not openly in some Indian quarters that to serve the dubious purpose of political survival that Pandit Nehru with his grandiose vision of a conflict free non-alligned world surrendered vital national security interest to the ambition of being a world leader," he said.

The remarks made yesterday came against the backdrop of the recent comments by the current Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne that the outcome of the 1962 war with China would have been different had the IAF been used in an offensive role.

Asked to expand on his remarks, Tipnis today said Nehru was the "major contributor" for India's debacle.

72-year-old Tipnis, who had a three-year tenure as IAF Chief from December 31, 1998 was commissioned as a fighter pilot in 1960, two years before the hostilities broke out between India and China.

Tipnis said he had also seen an Army Chief in those days being "ticked off" like a school-boy by Prime Minister Nehru for his alleged petulance. The issue of IAF not being used in the 1962 hostilities is still debated by military historians and experts and there is no clarity as to why the air force was not used.

Browne had said the IAF was not allowed to be used in an offensive role and confined only to provide transport support to the Army. "These are open and glaring lessons we should have imbibed," he added.

For the first time in last 50 years, India celebrated the anniversary of the 1962 war with China on October 20 where Defence Minister A K Antony along with the three Services chiefs laid wreaths on the Amar Jawan Jyoti to pay tributes to the martyrs and participants of the war.

Air Chief Marshal Mr. Tipnis has said so precisely about Mr.Nehru`s blunder (with his self interest of the foolish vision of trying to become a world leader of peace at the cost of India), in the 1962 war between India and China, that this fact should be permanently recorded in the history of India for the generations to come. It is extremely foolish and naive that even today the Governmentt of India is not takiing a lesson from it and furthermore, arranging a joint military exercise with China instead of securing the borders in the right manner within right time frame. Selling best quality cotton to China and not encouraging industries in India to produce garments and other goods for the citizens of India is another SHORT SIGHT.

Glad to see finally people coming out against Mr. Nehru. It is Nehru and Gandhi family who has changed the history of India. They are ready to sacrifice the country for the sake of family.

Yes,every thing written and said by these officers, retired and serving,is correct absolutely one hundred percent. Even Nehru Ji had realised that he was stabbed in the back by his Chini Bhaiees and his heart attack and the subsequent death was due to that. He was the tallest Leader.HE had the strongest ambition/aspiration to become the World Leader. He acted in his self interest and not in the National interest. The Army,Air force and the Navy were very ill equipped.Where was the money.? India was very poor. Another factor which has NOT come to light is the incapable General T.N.Kaul,his distant relative, who was in the charge of the troops at the border.WE Cried when he died,as he was CHAACHA NEHRU TO US. In addition,we would like to bring out what we know further/more.In 1948 the Indian Army was chasing the Pakistani infiltrators out of Jammu &Kashmir. There was hardly any fight. It was a matter of one/two days.Nehru Ji said what will the World say.STOP IT. That`s how India has the Kashmir problem till date. There was NO reason to stop at that point. That was another oversight of the National interest. The country should have analysed all that long ago and taken the corrective steps. The sentiments/emotions/personal interests/friendships are NOTHING WHEN the National interest gets involved therein.

Nehru is the worst PM India has had till date. India was thrashed by china in 1962 thanx to Nehru & also all credit for kashmir issue (still goin on) started under his rule and is carried forward by the congress till today. it was nehru who ordered to withdraw troops from kashmir & declare cease fire in 1947. if he had waited 2 more days the entire kashmir would have been taken back by indian armed forces.

It was not ont only the 1962 war, but majority of the problems today faced by India are because of Nehru and Gandhi family
