India awaits post mortem report of Chamel Singh from Pakistan

Despite repeated reminders, India is still awaiting the post mortem report of Chamel Singh, an Indian prisoner who died in a Pakistani jail three months ago.

New Delhi: Despite repeated reminders, India is still awaiting the post mortem report of Chamel Singh, an Indian prisoner who died in a Pakistani jail three months ago.
"We have been following the case of the unfortunate death of an Indian prisoner in Pakistan and this has been going on for quite some time. "For more than two months now. We have repeatedly requested the Pakistanis authorities for a post mortem report.... The report has not been provided to us as yet," said Syed Akbaruddin, official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs. He said any future course of action will be decided on the basis of that report. "Once we receive the post mortem report, obviously, we will study it and then decide on further course of action. But first order of business is to get the post mortem report as early as possible. We have requested Pakistan on several occasions to speed up that post mortem report," the spokesperson said. India has already conveyed its concern to Pakistani authorities over the unnecessary delay in providing details of post-mortem and other details, official sources said. Singh had died in mysterious conditions in a Pakistani jail on January 15. However, the autopsy was conducted on March 13 in Lahore. There was, however, no explanation why the Pakistan authorities took almost two months to conduct the autopsy. The preliminary report states that traces of four injuries were found on the body, including a fracture of the right knee, an abrasion of 1.5 cm to 2 cm on the left knee joint, an abrasion over the upper lip and scars on the thigh. He was serving a five-year prison term at Kot Lakhpat Jail for his alleged involvement in espionage. PTI
