Jairam Ramesh's toilet remark draws protest

New Delhi: The activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal on Sunday protested outside the residence of Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh here for his comment that there are more temples in the country than toilets.

The activists have demanded an apology from Ramesh for his recent remark.

On Friday, Ramesh remarked that "toilets are more important than temples. No matter how many temples we go to, we are not going to get salvation. We need to give priority to the toilets and cleanliness".

The opposition and others have also criticised Ramesh's remarks.

Meanwhile, police said they do not have any information about the protest before Jairam Ramesh's house.

The Ministry for Rural Development is set to launch a nationwide sanitation drive, Nirmal Bharat Yatra, to end open defecation.

The drive was meant to be launched on Thursday, but was indefinitely put off after heavy rain lashed Wardha, Maharashtra, from where the drive was set to begin. Mahatma Gandhi's Sewagram ashram is located at wardha.

On Saturday, the BJP also hit out at Ramesh, saying he should not make such statements which hurt the "fine fabric of faith and religion" in the country.

"Making of toilets and having faith in a religious place of worship are two different things. India is a multicultural country where we should have unblemished faith in a temple, a mosque, a gurudwara or a church. You cannot juxtapose the two," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He alleged Ramesh has made a political statement here and advised him to instead concentrate "salvaging the battered image of the UPA government".

The BJP maintained that one should not get into the debate of what- a temple or a toilet- is more important.

"While (public) toilets, which have to be built by the administration, are necessary, religion is important as people have faith in it. It would be good for Mr Ramesh that out of his exuberance he stops making such comments which will destroy the fine fabric of religion and faith," Rudy said.

Meanwhile, Congress also appeared to disapprove of Ramesh for his comment, saying "we respect the sanctity of every religious place".

"We respect the sanctity of every religious place irrespective of the community it belongs to. I do not know the statement attributed to Ramesh. Perhaps it could have been distorted and he is in the best position to explain."

"Congress party believes in sarvadharmasambhav. Equal respect for all religions. Equal respect for all religious places", party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.

It is obvious this idiot Jairam Ramesh does not know how to talk. Wahat can temples do if mindless people relieve themselves around such places? Will this idiot say the same about other places of worship? It requires sagacity not to hurt the feelings of any community? Obviously, Ramesh feels Hinduism is an ``easy religion`` and anyone can get waway saying anything against Hindu religious places.

it is a matter of shame to note the contents of protest by hand full of people. they have not bothered to get into the root of the version. jairam is very correct to say so. u visit any temple u will find lack of sanitation, cleanliness in and around the surroundings. motive is to say we should come forward to achieve good hygienic, clean and livable surroundings rather than killing self by unhygienic surroundings. time has changed we should hold the same old stick to gauge petty versions.

Jairam Ramesh is so right. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Has anyone checked out the state of some or our old temples, even those under the World Heritage tag, Pigeons abound dirtying the place apart from other forms of rodents. The rightwingers only need an excuse to get into offence mode. It`s time for some plainspeak and I am glad that Jairam had the courage to say what so many feel including the members of the hypocritical Congress party.

R amesh Jairam was only highlighting absence of sanitary facilities even after 60 years of independence of a nation. But,it shows now that there are people who still do not give the importance it deserves while picking up the comments at a tangent about religious angle to the comment. Is it not a shame that we do not give importance to health and hygiene top importance? The messenger in this connection is wrongly targeted for political brownie points.

such comments will come from a congresman only they are such useless and mind less people and only fit for scandals and looting of this country I cannot see this party thrown out of power as early as possible and see the response from the majarity people of this country no one seems to have cared about the statement made by a congress foo. if it is for mosques rather than temples then the whole country would have blown out of proportion by hue and cry of the minoritry people and their vote bank politicians

It is shame to make a comparison even statistically a toilet and temple. Neither the person does not know what is the meaning of these two words or his intention is to only insult the feelings. Let him spend to have more toilets if they are less .
