London: Vikas Gowda became the fourth-ever Indian male athlete to have reached the final round of an Olympic event when he entered the final of the men’s discus throw after touching the 65.20m mark in the qualifications at the London Olympics. He would look to create history by reaching the podium on Wednesday (12:15 am).
Vikas, who failed to qualify for the final in Beijing, is determined to win a medal and end the drought. He has been training under his personal coach John Godina at World Throws Centre in Phoenix, Arizona, for the past three years. In June, Vikas became the first Indian to win a medal at the prestigious Diamond League Series in New York with a throw of 64.86m. He has won silver at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the Guangzhou Asian Games. However, it remains to be seen if he can prove his mettle at the biggest sporting event.
