New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party’s PM-candidate Narendra Modi paid his tributes to legendary freedom fighter and martyr Shaheed Bhagat Singh and remembered him on his 106th birth anniversary on Saturday.
Sharing his thoughts on Twitter, the BJP leader wrote, “Tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary. His true devotion towards our Motherland will remain an inspiration forever.”
Inarguably one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle, Singh was born on September 28, 1907 and was sentenced to death alongwith Rajguru and Sukhdev in the Lahore conspiracy case and hanged to death on 23 March, 1931.
Earlier this year a row had erupted over the inconspicuous absence from government records the mention of Bhagat Singh as a martyr.
To douse the controversy Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself stepped in and said, "Bhagat Singh is a martyr and part of our proud national legacy. The supreme sacrifice made by `Shaheed` Bhagat Singh should not be questioned by anyone in the country.
The statement came against the backdrop of the Home Ministry`s reply to an RTI application, saying that it has no record to show whether Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were declared martyrs or not.
This prompted Members of Parliament from across the party lines to voice their concern over the grave omittance.
