Navi Pillay to continue as UNHR chief?

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has requested the General Assembly to extend the term of human rights chief Navi Pillay by two years.

New York: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has requested the General Assembly to extend the term of human rights chief Navi Pillay by two years, after having persuaded her to stay on.

"The secretary general is pleased that he was able to prevail on Navi Pillay, subject to General Assembly approval, to stay on as high commissioner for human rights for two more years," a statement released by his office said.

Ban has formally proposed to the 193-member UN General Assembly that the appointment of Pillay be extended for a two year period and he "trusts the General Assembly will approve this extension."

Pillay`s four-year term as head of the UN human rights body was to end this year.
