Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ton Friday presented one of her paintings to Sachin Tendulkar even as the Eden Gardens crowd gave a standing ovation to the legendary batsman at the end of his 199th and penultimate Test match.
As a farewell tribute, Banerjee gifted him a painting of a tree, an artwork that has her trademark brush-strokes. A maverick painter, the Trinamool Congress supremo has made more than 200 paintings and has held three exhibitions.
As a mark of respect, Banerjee also presented Tendulkar with a turban, which the former India captain Sourav Ganguly put on the iconic batsman`s head.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha presented a Durga idol to Tendulkar, while Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Jagmohan Dalmia gifted a statue of a banyan tree with 199 golden leaves, besides a golden coin that was ordered specially for the toss in this match.
The CAB had earlier announced that 199kg of rose petals would be showered on Tendulkar on the last day of the game with the help of small aircrafts flying over the grounds, but the event got cancelled.
Since there was hardly any chance of Tendulkar coming out to bat during the day today, Eden Gardens recorded a thin attendance.
