New Delhi: If a proposal mooted by the Women and Child Development Ministry is implemented, husbands could soon be legally mandated to pay a fixed monthly salary to their housewives for doing daily chores.

In fact, the ministry is currently preparing the draft of the Bill and it could be tabled before the Cabinet soon.

Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath reportedly said the move is part of government’s efforts aimed at women empowerment.

Tirath said the government will set a standard for the salary amount to be paid to housewives every month.

The minister informed that once the draft Bill is ready, it could be presented before Parliament within six months.

A senior government official said husbands would be required to deposit 10-20% of their monthly salary in a bank account to be opened in the name of their wife.

I feel this is creation of a defective mentality at work in Ministry. If a man don`t respect his wife and he is reluctant to provide her a good life then this Law will not make any difference. Those who are in support of this LAW do they know that domestic violence is a crime but still it seen in every city. Please make a note I mentioned CITY where we consider people are developed keep a side those women who are in rural areas and deprived of basic needs. If a husband can hurt a wife physically then he can take this money back from the wife without taking it into record, then who is going to control this? and who will be able to control this. We should understand mostly rural women need help than urban, but implementation of this LAW in rural India is near to impossible. This will give no benefit to those who really need it but give a tool to those who can miss-use it.

if a man becomes house husband and does all house work he will never get respect from he will be called a useless fellow or a nikamma.govt or this minister will never think of paying these house husbands.these women will themselves brand them as nikamma.and they are demanding pay for housewives.this is double standards.they will only value this work if a woman does it.if a man does it will go unnoticed.

Practical questions on the tax front. Will the wife be liable for paying advance taxes and need to file a tax return? If the husband is self-employed, then can he claim this as a deduction? Does the husband have to provide a tax certificate every financial year and provide the same information to the IT dept? In cases of larger sums, is the husband liable for tax deducted at source? In case of a divorce, what happens to this payment, does it continue to have be paid in addition to alimony? Nice thought, but our netas don`t think through all the issues.

now husbands will throw the monthly salary towards their wife and relax. they will abstain from any outdoor responsibilities and put it on wife because they have done there part by paying them salary.

at one place this ministry wants equal share in property earned by husband during marriage and at the sametime ministry wants him to pay salary.both can`t happen. first decide what minister what do you want a housewive to become a servant who is only entiteld for salary not share in property or a housewive who is life patner and has the right to property earned during marriage.i think she is a confused minister or wants to keep both provisions in hand like dono hath mein laddu or she is trying to act over smart to become popular.how these NGO`S are so highly rated inspite of some of their foolish recomendations.

If this proposal becomes a law, the wife will officially become the servant of the husband. There might be poaching of wives like other employees. Suppose a husband pays Rs.500 pm to wife, she may get an offer of Rs.1000 pm, if she agreed to become home maker else where. Of course it will lead to break up families. For the first time, true worth of women will be determined by the govt. It will be far better if the govt pays the wives, and discontinues schemes like MNREGA.

It will be a very welcome step. At present Husbands CAN not pay any salary to their wives legally and income earned by wives of this amount is Taxable in the hands of Husband.

If this happens, then Husbands should get exemption for this in Income Tax, and Wife should file her I-T return saperately.
