New Delhi: The UPA government on Wednesday comfortably won the vote on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in Lok Sabha.

A total of 253 members - out of the 471 present and voting - voted against the motion on FDI moved by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, implying they were in favour of foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail. 218 members voted in favour of the Opposition’s motion.

The UPA government also won the vote on FEMA amendment in Lok Sabha by 254 to 224 votes. 478 members were present and voting.

  • SP MPs also walk out of the Lok Sabha.

  • Sharma tells House to reject the motions against FDI in retail.

  • Ahead of the FDI vote, BSP MPs walk out of the Lok Sabha.

  • There is a difference between consensus and unanimity, says Sharma, adding we would have to wait forever to achieve unanimity on FDI in retail.

  • Opposition can't tell an elected government what to choose and what not, says Sharma.

  • Our sons and daughters will get jobs if FDI is allowed in the retail sector, says the minister.

  • I acknowledge that if the government went back on the assurance on FDI in retail made in Parliament, that's a serious charge. However, the charge is far from the truth, says Anand Sharma.

  • Govt committed to consensus and consultation on FDI, says the minister.

  • Twelve farmer unions were consulted about allowing FDI in retail sector, says the Commerce Minister

  • BJP asked us why the government changed its stand. Our question is, why did they change their stand, asks Sharma.

  • Joshi says FDI which was once anti-national has now become national. How?

  • FDI in retail was not in the manifesto of BJP in 2004 or 2009. How can Kapil Sibal put his thoughts in our manifesto? says Joshi.

  • Implement FDI in multi-brand retail all over the country, says Joshi.

I am one of those among crores of common men who hoisted the National Flag on the terrace of the house at the midnight of 15th August 1947. To day I have to say regretfuly that the Congress has become ``Desh Droahi Party``.

Only hoisting the National Flag on the terrace of the house does not mean whatever you think is good for society. You should have some awareness of economics and markets to understand how the government policies affects tho people. FDI in retail is a neccessity for current economic condition of India. It never adversly affect farmers or consumers. It reduces black marketing done by middlemen which leads to inflation, international standards will be adopted by food processing industry which will reducd adultration. Laks of job will be generated. Farmers will get higher prices for thier grains.

while the debate was going on I asked one of my patients who had come to consult me,about his views on FDI. I was surprised that he was welcoming the development. His logic was very clear. He grows potatoes which sales for 70 to 200 Rs per 20kg. From this year he has switched over to growing potatoes as per requirement of FDI and has been assured of Rs.160 per 20 kg.if he is able to maintain the quality. As a consumer probably we will be able to get a quality product which corne shops have failed to deliver all these years. WELCOME FDI

I think FDI in retail sector is a bad thing that can happen to india. There are reports that foreign companies sell banned/expired/rotten products in new packing in indian markets as our government only see word FOREIGN there and no one cares for the quality. What gurantees that the product will be safe and adhere to international quality standards? I heard a news that some country (BRITAIN I THINK) banned the use of products from india due to an epidemic in india. This swine flu is not from india but was brought to india by foreigners. The result of strictness on food adultratrion and quality can be justified from the facts that milk products, packed items, cooking oil, spices etc . are not pure and GOVERNMENT SAYS WE ARE HELPLESS, so could they react in case of bad proucts through thesr FDI retail chains ? I think FDI is a serious issue when quality standards and strict laws are not implemented.

If BSP, SP and DMK helps Congress in this bill, people of this country will never trust these political parties and people of the country will reject their candidates in the next general election whenever it happens. We also ask people of UP and TN to ask their representatives they have elected to resign from their respective seats immediately as they are helping anti national policiies in Parliament and doing double standards on several issues. They do not deserve to be sitting as ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES from their repsective areas as their party openly states that FDI in retail is anti national and they will never ever support to allow this policy to happen. BSP, SP - the most castiest forces in UP should be thrown out by the people of UP and DMK - the symbol of corruption in South should also be removed from the political map of India. By supporting FDI in retail, Congress is completing the sell out of India to their foreign masters and SP, BSP, DMK and other parties are acting as JUDAS - Cheaters of Indian Republic

100% true...FDI is reverse of software or BPO outsourcing from US or foreign countries bringing dollars and creating employment..its selling of Chinese scrap products in India through Tesco and Walmart....these are mere cruel politics used by some disloyal political crooks either bribed or some personal profit or some foreign pressure....stop FDI...its going to paralyze small scale and medium scale industries and bring profit to our rivals China......

    sonu - bangalore
As we r addicted to McDonalds,Adidas,Nike,Levis....similarly people will be addicted to all Chinese products after FDI...Indian manufacturer will become hand pact and will be forced to shut down because they cannot compete to Chinese products.Instead of promoting and selling others product govt sud support Indian manufacturers to prosper and export.FDI single retail is enough we dont want in multiretail..\
