Infant dies for Rs 200 at hospital; govt orders probe Zeenews Bureau

Jalandhar: In a shocking incident that has put humanity to shame, a newborn girl child died at a government hospital in Jalandhar after doctors removed her from the incubator because her parents could not pay Rs 200.

The girl child was born on July 20. Being a premature baby, she needed incubator support. However, civil hospital authorities asked her father to arrange money - to pay the electricity charges to run incubator – to continue keeping the baby in incubator.

A painter by profession, Sanjiv Kumar, could not arrange Rs 200 demanded by the hospital. The poor man asked many people to lend him money but no one came forward to help.

Despite Kumar’s inability to pay Rs 200, hospital authorities, showing no empathy, removed the incubator leading to the death of the baby on Wednesday night.

Kumar said, "The baby was very ill. They (hospital authorities) asked us to deposit Rs 200 first. We begged and pleaded them to admit our child but they refused."

He also alleged that the glucose drip was also removed from the baby for non payment of dues.

The child’s mother Sunita is inconsolable. “They killed my child,” she said.

Hospital CMO says that he can’t believe that an incident like this can happen. He has asked the baby’s father to submit a complaint and then he will look into the matter.

Meanwhile, the state government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The incident marks a new low in the absolute lack of compassion in our society. A baby loses life for Rs 200, what next?

The person ordering the removal of life-saving equipment should be charged with murder and tried for death penalty

Shame on the doctors in that hospital. But this is fact all over in India. To the world India is a developing nation. But the mentality of professionals remains the same. The only thing is increased is mrore bribes and corruption. I feel ashamed that in today`s time Indian doctors are still primitive natured.

I am a pediatrician. An infant would not usually die on being removed from an incubator (which only provides warmth), unless the baby was extremely preterm or there were other medical issues. This story has been airing since last night and the media continues to sensationalise it but still hasn`t gotten any further concrete facts. Yes it is a shocking story. But the media`s failure to gather further facts is just as reprehensible. Government hospital doctors often work with minimal resources and I would not be so quick to judge without knowing all the facts.

Our President is the first CITIZEN of India. We cannot blame him for this incident. Further this is not a time to blame each other. We are Indian and one Indian should not suffer because of other. Paisa to har koi kamata hai kuch punya to kama lo...........Apnai leyai to har koi jeeta hai kabhi doosaro ke liye jee ke dekho Zindigi ka sahi maaza tab hi aayega.

I am not a doctor. But put yourself in the doctors shoes what would you have done? This is a sad story but no body gives in charity. Thug politicians just are busy taking bribes. The father of the child should have approached some TV or radio station & asked public for help or on the internet for help. He would have received a lot of money. Here in US some 69 year old happened to tell some journalist that the kids were teasing her etc and public saw her goal they donated about 1/2 million$. She needed 5000 only. Lots of people even contributing 1 to 5$ even make difference. This guy was really unlucky. But for the doctor how can he just make his living if he just gives away free. He himself has to pay for all the resources like IV medicine, injections, electricity etc. I really feel for the poor father & also for the doctor who no matter how compassionate he/she is his hands are tied. MAY BE THEY need to create some foundations of some rich people who can be approached by these people to receive aid.
