BJP MLA demands ban on skirts in schools, NCW seeks apology

New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma on Monday said Rajasthan MLA Banwari Lal Singhal should apologise to the girls over his remark that skirts in schools should be banned.

"It is a weird and sad statement because we want to impose restrictions on the clothing of the girls. I want to ask the MLA that a three-year-old girl and an 80-year-old woman are not provoking anyone by wearing a skirt," she said.

Sharma, who has demanded the enactment of stringent laws to deter people from committing crimes like rape, further said it is extremely painful if we talk about the dress code several years after Independence.

"Why do we want to make these kids prisoners? And if we talk about the dress code several years after Independence, then it is painful. He should understand that in today''s age, why should there be a difference between a boy and a girl. He (MLA) should say that the society should change its mindset," said Sharma.

"From the different comments that are coming nowadays, I think that a leader who reaches the assembly or Parliament with the help of the people''s vote should at least avoid making these types of remarks. Such comments worsen the environment," she added.

Singhal, a BJP MLA from Alwar (Urban), has demanded a ban on skirts as uniform in schools to keep girls away from ''men''s lustful gazes''.

Singhal has asked the state government to prohibit private schools from making girls wear skirts as uniform, citing it as the reason behind increased cases of sexual harassment.

He has also written to Rajasthan Chief Secretary CK Mathew, and demanded that girl students be made to wear shirts and trousers or ''salwar-kameez'' to reduce chances of their being subjected to lewd comments or harassment.

Sirs...!!!! The same reaction you should have shown against the words of Mukharji, the congress MP and President`s son. Only then your activities could be justified as balanced one.

It is unfortunate in India that there is no protest when a porn star is introduced into the frontline film fraternity, but there is a protest when a person wants the dress code of an Indian dress. Yes a three-year-old girl and an 80-year-old woman are not provoking anyone by wearing a skirt. These are the rarest of the rare cases. In that care the criminal is mentally sick. But what the MLA is said of lustful gazes is also true. It will save the girl from the lustful gaze of the males and the girls will be safer. One lustful gaze leads to lewd comments which may lead to eve-teasing and that ends with acid attack or rape. His comments are more constructive than the comment of Sanjay Nirupam, the CPI leader of West Bengal. What does she mean when she says “Why do we want to make these kids prisoners”? Is Salwar Kameez dress of the prisoners? No one likes to wear a helmet, but it saves us from accidents.

seriously?we were suppose to progress aftr 65 years of independence.Modernization is not the reason for such shameful n heinous crimes its the solution. Why do you think the rate of such crimes are less in western countries.Don`t they wear provocative clothes? Its the thinking .You should rather concentrate on changing the male mindsets rather than manipulating female attire.Seriously no offence but you guys are old and your thinking is stagnated so bloody change it coz if you don`t rapes will happen and then you will make statements like wear that naqab like the muslim women or even better do not get out of the house. It will never stop. And since mr.Banwarilal has taken.the liberty of makin such a statement to stop rapes .e

Height of illiteracy. Even twenty five years back when I was in school, my class mates wear skirts and we never thought that way, our society was allowing at that time. What happens now after 25 years ? Where our mental attitude is leading? Its a matter of Big Shame.

where r u Miss Sharma till date when president Son made remarks. There should be code of dress in all school and colleage as school and colleage are consider as a home of devi sarswati and we should respect it. U can wear what u want outside from school and colleage campus. Secondly we need to take good lesson from western culture not bad lesson. Something are good in western culture due to enviroment condtion but samething are bad in india due to having opposite enviroment condtion. For example non vege is a life support food in cold country but in indai due to having hot enviorment it is not feasible to eat 365 days. So point of message is that pls do not target banwarilal he may be right by saying banned of skirt in school and colleage but he must be wrong if he said that skirt must be banned in india
