`HRW running smear campaign against Sri Lanka` Colombo: Pointing to a smear campaign against it by international rights groups, Sri Lanka on Saturday said it is confident of facing the UN Human Rights Council at its next session later this month as it has a clean slate.

Human rights envoy and minister Mahinda Samarasinghe slammed international rights groups for what he called were attempts to slander the image of Sri Lanka for political gain. Samarasinghe said the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has commenced a smear campaign against Sri Lanka. The HRW in a letter to member states has called for UNHRC to go into action against Sri Lanka.

"This was expected. These organisations are trying to create an adverse opinion against us. It is their planned action leading to each HRC sessions. We have no fears," the minister said.

He said the government had already implemented some of the recommendations of a government-appointed reconciliation panel that looked into the war and the lessons learnt from it, and that action was underway to implement other recommendations.

"You can't expect all recommendations to be implemented within two months. We will ask for time. It will be our responsibility to implement the recommendations," Samarasinghe said referring to the report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) issued in November, and how his government would approach the UN human rights council.

The LLRC was cited as the Sri Lankan response to calls for independent investigations into alleged war crimes committed by both government troops and the LTTE during the last phase of the military conflict which ended in May 2009.

The LLRC report has recommended that allegations of civilian casualties be investigated though it exonerated the troops of direct responsibility of targeting the civilians.

The report has recommended measures to analyse the deep rooted causes of the ethnic strife between the Sinhala majority and the Tamil minority to ensure reconciliation.

The UNHRC sessions are to commence on February 27 in Geneva, Switzerland and is to continue till March 23rd. While it is not yet clear whether Sri Lanka would present the LLRC report at the council session, top officials have said they were prepared to take the floor and respond to any questions raised by the international community on the report.

Sarath Silva - Colombo
Winning the war did not occur automatically or because of the talented army only. Otherwise we would have won in 1987 at famous Wadamarachchi operation. It was ended up with the involvement of India. This time we succeeded due to good leadership. This situation cannot digest to LTTE supportive countries and Tamil Diaspora. Now all citizens who are staying in the country are enjoying the peace. Now no one is there to kidnap their children to get involve with war. They are going to schools. Any items that they need to purchase are available for Colombo price. They can sell their cultivation to whole country. But defeated said fractions are trying to change creating HR issues, corruptions …etc. If any unlawful, undemocratic …etc matters are happening in the country people can defeat this government without giving landslide continuous election victories. Now our country is not like Banana Republic. Everywhere developments are happening. That is why opposition could not do any challenge against the government. That is why certain countries cannot find and boost any Muppet against the government like they did against their enemies. Mr. Fernando, we cannot see any different with you and Tamil Diaspora. Even though Tamil Diaspora is against the Sarath Fonseka but during the election they supported for him against the President.

You Sinhala Apartheid racists denied fundamental and human rights to the Tamils since independence from the British. Now your Sinhala leaders have proved the world that they belong to a race that commit war crimes, human rights abuses, deny all democratic norms and values, deny accountability and justice!

Enemy against SL is not external, but within SL administration. Saliya Wickrematunge is insipid and unable to articulate effectively the case of Sri Lanka in any discussion. MR should replace him sooner than later.

No one but the corrupt Regime is to be blamed for the mess they are in today. You are providing the material by your actions for the HRW to act against you. After winning the war, instead of granting redress to the Citizens, decided to tighten your powers by converting democratic Sri Lanka to a lawless, corrupt Banana Republic. As a result the citizens lost all their rights including the Judiciary. However the biggest blunder is the illegal arrest and the use of Kangaroo Courts to jail the War Hero who was also the Opposing Presidential Candidate. Dinning and Dancing with the LTTE Terrorists involved in mass murder and even the attack on the sacred Temple of the Tooth, who now support the corrupt Regime for their personal gain, does not help you at all. In fact the democratic World laughs at you for your stupidity.

Typical response of an LTTE remnant hidding in Toronto for sure! Terrorist states USA and UK are humiliated in Afghanistan unable to beat Taliban and Al Qaeda! Sri Lanka only faced a terrorist problem and now LTTE terrorists are eliminated! No other problem existed in Sri Lanka at all.
