Muslim youth, Christian girl in hospital after suicide attempt

Faced with the opposition to their marriage plan, a Muslim youth and his Christian girlfriend allegedly tried to commit suicide and have been admitted to a hospital in a critical state in Pakistan`s Punjab province.

Lahore: Faced with the opposition to their marriage plan, a Muslim youth and his Christian girlfriend allegedly tried to commit suicide and have been admitted to a hospital in a critical state in Pakistan`s Punjab province.

Abid Husain, 20, and Sheeba Masih, 19, of Chak- 86/6-R, Sahiwal district, some 200 kilometres from here, were in love but their families were oppose to the idea of their marriage because of difference in faiths, police said.

As Sheeba`s family fixed her engagement with a man of Christian faith the duo got upset.

The couple reportedly planned to commit suicide. On Thursday, Abid and Sheeba met at some place in their locality and shot at themselves. They were shifted to hospital where their condition is stated to be critical.

However, Sheeba`s family told police that after knowing her engagement plans, Abid got infuriated and intercepted Sheeba in a village street and opened fire on her.

Police have yet to register a case as they are investigating.
