Kochi: A sessions court on Tuesday sentenced eight CPI-M workers to life in the case relating to the murder of Congress Trade union-INTUC Idukki district secretary in October 2004.

The sessions court judge D Pappachan also imposed a fine of rs 25,000 each which will be given to the victim's mother.

The court found them guilty of the murder of Balasubramaniam alias Balu yesterday and reserved the verdict for Tuesday.

Ten persons were accused in the case. While one died, another was acquitted.

The prosecution case was that Balasubramaniam, who was also a leader of the High Range Plantation employees Union, was hacked to death by the accused while addressing a meeting at Pattumala on October 20,2004.

The trial was shifted from Thodupuzha to Ernakulam sessions court following a Kerala high court order on a petition filed by Balasubramaniam's mother.
