Gorakhpur: Six more children succumbed to encephalitis in Gorakhpur on Saturday, taking the toll in the viral fever in the district this year to 464.
Twenty-one patients suffering from the fever have been
admitted to various hospitals in the region, Additional
Director Health LP Rawat said.
He said a total of 2,709 patients suffering from
Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES)
were admitted this year to BRD Medical College and other
hospitals of the region. Out of this, 464 died.
The dead include two from Kushinagar, one each from
Mahrajganj and Basti and one from adjoining Bihar.
Japanese Encephalitis is caused by mosquito bite
while AES spreads due to contaminated water. Both affect the
central nervous system and brain.
