Angry mob tosses Ukraine's MP into trash bin; abuses, tyre, water, hurled at him

Kiev: An angry Ukrainian mob assaulted lawmaker Vitaly Zhuravsky and tossed him into a 'wheelie' trash bin outside the parliament building, hurling taunts and profanities at him on Tuesday morning.

Zhuravsky who was a key member in ex-President Viktor Yanukovich’s Party of the Regions, might have invited people's ire as he was the man behind a bill passed in January that restricted freedom of speech (criminalised libel) in wake of strong anti-government sentiments prevalent then.

What added to the protesters' fury on Tuesday was Zhuravsky's vote favouring amnesty for pro-Russia rebels.

A video footage that showed the humiliating treatment meted out to the Ukrainian lawmaker, created a buzz online.

In the video, Zhuravsky is seen walking past the crowd outside the Parliament building when he is assaulted by a handful of angry men, who then grab him and shove him into a “wheelie” rubbish bin.

The angry mob then keeps him pinned down there amidst the stinky pile of rubbish, hurling taunts and abuses at him.

Also, a car tyre and water was thrown at the lawmaker, who is now a member of the Economic Development Party.

"We live in a country where blood flows because of you," one of the furious protesters was quoted as saying, according to Reuters.

Some 3,000 people have lost their lives in five months of unrest by pro-Russian rebels.

Zhuravsky's dumping into the rubbish bin came on a day when lawmakers ratified a key EU pact, that was earlier shelved by Yanukovych, triggering violent protests that killed dozens and forced the then President to flee to Russia.

Tuesday also saw the Ukrainian government offering limited self-rule for two restive regions in eastern Ukraine, as well as amnesty for pro-Russian rebels fighting there.
