Lagos: The Nigerian Army reportedly launched a major offensive against terror Islamist group Boko Haram and destroyed their camps in north-east Nigeria.

The authorities feared attacks by the well-equipped militant camps in nearby areas but the claims are yet to be verified, as per a BBC report.

The militant camps had set up dormitories and hospital facilities, Brigadier General Olukolade said during a news conference on Friday, the report stated.

The Boko Haram militants planned terror strikes from these camps and co-ordinated their activities from these base.

Boko Haram wanted to carve out an Islamic caliphate from northern Nigeria but the country's president declared emergency in the states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa where they were prevalent.

Over 2,000 people have been killed since the radicals started their killings in 2009.
