Cairo: An Egyptian court found the three al-Jazeera journalists guilty of aiding banned Muslim Brotherhood on Monday and sentenced them for 7-10 years.
The three journalists - Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and baher Mohamed - were arrested in December last year on charges of supporting Muslim Brotherhood and spreading false information, as per BBC news report.
The arrest and subsequent trial of the journalists led to international outrage with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott appealing to the Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi for their release.
The three journalists have been in detention from the last six months with prosecution demanding a strict punishment of from nearly 15-25 years.
Around 20 people were tried in the court including nine al-Jazeera employees.
During a visit to Cairo, US Secretary of State John Kerry made an appeal to the nation to maintain freedom of press.
The Egyptian government reportedly accuses Doha of supporting Mulsim Brotherhood which they have called as a “terrorist organisation.”
It has reportedly accused Doha of backing Morsi`s Brotherhood, while the emirate openly denounces the repression of the Islamist movement`s supporters which has killed more than 1,400 people, the AFP reported.
