IAEA rebukes Iran`s nuclear defiance

UN watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) rebuked Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment.

Vienna: UN watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday rebuked Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. The UN nuclear agency voiced particular concern about Fordow, an Iranian enrichment site deep underground. 31 out of the 35 nation members of the IAEA voted in favour of the resolution drawn up by the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. Cuba is the only nation which voted against the resolution. Ecuador, Tunisia and Egypt abstained, while the 31 other nations supported the resolution. All four countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement of which Iran is the rotating president. An IAEA report in late August said Iran had doubled its capacity over the last three months. There are pressing demands that Iran should take actions to diminish fears that it might be seeking atomic arms. But Tehran has refused to comply with UN and IAEA demands by insisting that its nuclear programme is “peaceful”.
