Tehran: In what highlights the persistent bitterness in relations between Tehran and Washington despite a historic nuclear accord signed recently, Supreme Leader Ayatollah al Khamenei in a tweet threatened US President Barack Obama, claiming Iran will defeat US in case a war took place.

The provocative tweet posted from @khamenei_ir also showed a silhouette picture of a suited man wearing a US flag lapel and a red tie that apparently resembled US President Barack Obama, as per a Daily Mail report.

“US president has said he could knock out Iran’s military. We welcome no war, nor do we initiate any war, but if any war happens, the one who will emerge loser will be aggressive and criminal US,” Khamenei's tweet read.

In the tweet, Khamenei referred to a statement made by Obama almost two weeks ago, soon after a nuclear deal was signed between Iran and the P5+1 - the US, China, France, Russia and the UK, plus Germany.

In an interview to New York Times' Thomas Friedman, when asked why should Iran be afraid of the US in case of non-implementation of the nuclear deal, Obama had replied, ““Because we could knock out their military in speed and dispatch if we chose to. And I think they have seen my willingness to take military action where I thought it was important for US interests”.

According to the nuclear deal, Iran will curb its nuclear activity for over a decade in exchange of sanctions relief.
