London: American Michelle Wie has bagged her first major title as she defeated world number one Stacy Lewis with two-strokes in the US Women`s Open at Pinehurst.
24-year-old Wie carded a level-par 70 to see off the challenge of Lewis, who posted a 66.
According to The BBC, Wie said that she had a lot of fun, adding that she walked up 18 with goose bumps and kind of had the same putt as Martin Kaymer did to win the men`s US Open last week, but did not hit as hard as him.
Wie said that there were moments of doubt during her career but all the people around her never lost faith in her.
Wie reportedly holed out bravely for double bogey on 16 after the approach shot landed in a bush, ensuring that she stayed a stroke ahead of Lewis followed by a superb birdie putt at the par-three 17th and she drilled her final drive down the last to set up a closing par and the victory.
Meanwhile, South Korean Amy Yang, playing with Wie, fell away with a 74, while Northern Ireland`s Stephanie Meadow, who was playing in her first professional tournament, finished third, three shots behind Wie, thanks to a final-round 69, the report added.
