New Delhi: Stressing the need for making the society better for girls, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday paid tribute to the December 16 gang-rape victim and said it is important that 'Nirbhayas' around us should feel fearless.

"It is very important that Nirbhayas around us should feel fearless. We should respond to the screams we all come across to change the situation," Sisodia said while speaking at a function here on the 4th anniversary of the horrific 2012 gang-rape incident.

"We should not be silent to the sufferings of the girls around us," he said, adding, "if we really want to give tribute to Nirbhaya, then we should work for making our society a better place for girls".

Nirbhaya's parents also attended the function organised by the Delhi Government to create awareness on women safety in the national capital.

Addressing the function, Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said parents should treat girls equally as they are not a burden on the society.

"Girls are not a burden to the family and the society. Youths should bring the change in the overall picture. It is also important that parents should treat girls equally," she said.

The programme also featured two plays by the Asmita Theatre Group to create awareness among the youths on the issue.
