Chandigarh school dropout hits jackpot of Rs1.5cr on first lottery

From a village shop owner to a crorepati, the journey perhaps was pre-determined by his luck. With an assurance of winning a prize money of Rs 400, he set out to purchase a ticket of the New Year Bumper lottery run by the Punjab government from Sirsa in December 2016.

New Delhi: From a village shop owner to a crorepati, the journey perhaps was pre-determined by his luck. With an assurance of winning a prize money of Rs 400, he set out to purchase a ticket of the New Year Bumper lottery run by the Punjab government from Sirsa in December 2016.

24-year-old Azad Singh, a confectioner at Dayyar village of Fatehabad district, won a cash prize of Rs 1.5 crore after he bought a lottery ticket for the first time. Singh is a school drop out who lives in a mud house and runs a small shop at the village bus stand. 

"I had purchased the ticket expecting to win an assured prize of Rs 400, but I never knew it would make me a crorepati and popular in my village." said TOI, quoting Singh.

Singh along with his friends and relatives started celebrating once he got to know about his win on Tuesday morning.

"On Monday evening, when I checked the status of lottery result, my ticket number matched with the top prize. I could not believe my eyes and checked it ten times to confirm," added TOI, quoting Singh.

Singh wish to donate a small amount in the name of God and spend a part of the rest to build a house of his own.

A team belonging to the Punjab state lotteries visited his place on Tuesday to confirm his win.
