1st Test, Day 3: Pakistan vs New Zealand – As it happened...

Live updates from day three of the first Test match being played between Pakistan and New Zealand at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

The third Day of the first Test also belonged to Pakistan as they bowled out New Zealand to mere 262 runs and took a healthy lead of 319 runs till the end of the day's play. Pakistani openers Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez are unbeaten on nine and five respectively in their second innings. On the fourth day they will look to score runs swiftly to put up a big total in front of the Black Caps. So at the moment Pakistan are on the driving seat.   

New Zealand 1st Innings

NZ lower batting order got collapsed as they lost last five wickets on mere 57 runs.And with that Pakistan got a healthy lead of 304 runs in the first innings. Rahat Ali and Zulfiqar Babar shared seven wickets between each other and played a major role to wrap up NZ's first innings on 262. For the Black Caps TWM Latham remained the highest run scorer with the knock of 103.

In last twenty overs NZ have lost the wicket of Neesham and added 54 runs to their total. The southpaw danced down the wicket for a big hit off Hafeez but missed the line and Ahmed didn't take much time to dislodge the stumps. The Black Caps are still trailing by 361 runs in their first innings. Latham and Watling are in the middle for NZ.

Anderson was finally dismissed by Rahat Ali in an unfortunate manner as he got an edge which went on to hit the stumps. James Neesham is the new man in while Latham continues to impress with his temperament in the longest format of the game. Latham is currently batting on 63 and his side desperately needs him to convert it into a century from here onwards.

After losing their established batsmen in a flurry, Kiwi are showing some fightback here, courtesy a gutsy partnership between Latham and Anderson. While Anderson has at times looked to lose his concentration, Latham has played a patient knock and has looked the better of the two batsmen. These two have so far added unbeaten 62 runs for the fourth wicket.

Ross Taylor was the next batsman to be dismissed as he too edged one from Babar towards the slip cordon where Asad Shafiq held onto a very good low catch. Latham survived a chance while batting on 32 as he edged one to the keeper which was droppped by Sarfaraz. 23 runs came in the last five overs and the Kiwis lost one wicket.

After conceding plenty of runs on two days in a row, it was a poor start from the Kiwis who lost two key batsmen in Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson. While Brendon edged one from Zulfiqar Babar towards slips, Williamson was unfortunate as he defended a delivery from Rahat Ali which bounced and hit his stumps. Ross Taylor and Tom Latham are the two batsmen at the crease.

Pakistani batsmen had a run-fest on Day 2, where Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Ahmed Shehzad, all slammed centuries. Before being dismissed hit-wicket off a bouncer, Shehzad scored a stupendous knock.

Meanwhile, Younus (100*) hit his fourth century in five innings while Misbah (102*) hit his third successive test hundred in a 193-run unbroken partnership.

At stumps on Day 2, Openers Brendon McCullum (nine) and Tom Latham (five) survived seven overs to guide New Zealand to 15 at stumps on day two, with the team still needing 352 more runs just to avoid the follow-on.
